“Wearkstatt”, which is a play on the German word for “workshop” was founded by designers Ursula and Jonas Hegewisch in the early 1990s to provide a new option to brides looking for elegant and glamorous yet timeless bridal fashion. From its origins in a small studio in New Yorks Soho area the company has grown to its current status as one of the most innovative and respected upscale bridal houses in the market, with retail representation all over the country. In Jonas and Ursulas designs the highest level of patternmaking and the most beautiful fabrics are combined with gorgeous detailing and uncompromising production quality. They often imbue their dresses with an element of surprise, such as ingenious seaming or a subtle sex appeal that is flattering but never vulgar. Wearkstatt gowns have been featured in a number of motion pictures, on television, in many publications and one of their designs is in the collection of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
As of August 1, 2005 the studio and showroom of Wearkstatt are closed.
