The Design Library

The Design Library is the world’s premier fabric design resource for the home furnishing, apparel, graphic arts, paper products, and publishing industries. The archives contain some five million original patterns organized by motif, style, layout, and period. The Design Library is located in the Hudson River Valley, 90 minutes from New York City and is open to the trade by appointment Monday through Friday. The Design Library was founded twenty-five years ago by Susan Meller.Through her love of old fabrics, a finely tuned eye, and a passion for collecting, she assembled a vast record of Western design. The first samples came from the attics and barns of rural New England - quilting scraps saved long ago. The foundation of the archive was broadened by the acquisition of important European collections, many of which had been ignored or neglected for generations. Susan Meller began the daunting project of cleaning, mounting and classifying the hundreds of thousands of period fabric swatches, original painted designs, and old wallpapers which had come under her stewardship. Today the archive numbers in the millions of historical designs.
