Pangborn Design Ltd
If you ask the average person what Pangborn Design does on a day-in, day-out basis, you would be lucky to get the same answer twice. Since 1979, the Detroit-based design studio has designed everything from corporate annual reports to baby bottles to designer neckwear, making it difficult to pin the company to a single category. However, if you were to ask the Pangborn designers about their business, you would get the same answer: We do design. Period.
At the heart of Pangborn Design is founder Dominic Pangborn. Born in Korea in 1952, Pangborn immigrated to Jackson, Michigan at the age of 10. After graduating from high school, he studied at the highly prestigious Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, an elite institution that also trained the likes of Walt Disney and other luminaries. In 1978, Pangborn moved to Detroit and a year later opened Pangborn Design. The firm soon began attracting a diverse clientele that included start-up businesses as well as Fortune 500 companies such as Procter & Gamble, General Motors, Kmart Corporation and Wolverine World Wide, to name a few.
Keeping in line with Pangborns personal philosophy of You only live once, Pangborn Design has expanded its services in its last two decades. Although graphic design is still the crux of the company, the firm now also specializes in consulting, marketing, merchandising, licensing and product design. In 1991, Dominic Pangborn created a line of designer neckwear, which is now favored by Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer and Japanese Consulate General Naoto Amaki. Eight years later, Pangborn still finds time to design ties as well as womens scarves, shirts and dinnerware collections.
Despite the intense workload, Pangborn regularly contributes to many worthy organizations. Aside from sitting on several charitable boards, he hosts bimonthly gallery shows that benefit local organizations like the Childrens Center of Michigan and Detroit Public Television. He also created Wellnesswear, a line of upscale accessories, which benefit people living with HIV/AIDS.
Given all this, it certainly appears Pangborn Design does everything. However, there is always one constant: creative, fresh design.
