Converse has sold nearly 575 million pairs of its classic Chuck Taylor All Star canvas basketball shoes, appealing to everyone from school kids to clothing designers. Converse also licenses its name to sports apparel. Its products are sold through more than 12,000 retailers and licensees in some 100 countries. Following years of declining sales, CVEO Corporation (which owned the Converse brand) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2001. Chairman Marsden Cason backed a firm (which later changed its name to Converse) that bought Converse; in 2003 the company was sold to NIKE.
